I made the above proposal that the Deputy Experintendent of Police should have immediate charge of the Gaol under my supervision, and I am still of opinion that such is the most desirable arrangement.

my view as to the Deputy Superintend= ent taking over such duties without

exka emolument.

I confess that when I made my recommendation that he should undertake the immediate charge undertake the mediate charge of

the Gool without esta remuneration I did not realise the work in connection

with the Gavl

irksome as I now know it to be.

that the prevent salary of the Deputy

Superintendent

Supermiter dent of Police is too small

to induce

officer to work contentedly in the Department for any length of thine without thought of promotions in other Departments.

In the interests of efficiency in the Police Department it is absolutely necessary that the Deputy Superintendent should remain continourly in the Tepartment, and not be transferred. to other Departments to fill aching apponituents.

To be a really useful officer he should have long experience of the work of the Department. She should act for the Captain Superintendent of Police when the latter is on bave and he should look to eventually a ceeding him as stead of the Department or for promotion in some other Colony.

I do not consider that $250 a month in this expensive Colony, in which the cost of living is becoming

heavier
